(Circa 1999) SmartWorks (System for Manuscript Authoring and Review Technology) is a web-based system supporting the submission of peer-reviewed science manuscripts through the review cycle. An object database is integrated with HTML code to produce a web based database system for manuscript submission. SmartWorks supports the electronic submission of journal manuscripts to an automated server. The server then initiates and maintains the workflow for peer review and production of the scientific manuscripts. Windows, Macintosh and UNIX computers are supported in this system. The server is located in San Diego and has received manuscripts worldwide. Editorial offices are in San Diego, but tracking and operation has also been worldwide.
These are the science journals that used SmartWorks when released.

SmartWorks has four basic software applications.
This module supports the submission of the manuscipt from the authors to the journal editorial board. Runs from any web browser. Any number of graphs, maps, tables, photographs, color images, micrographs, multimedia, PDFs or data files can be attached to the manuscript. The manuscript is structured, permitting full database operations. The system captures the major sections (title, abstracts, body, legends, references, acknowledgements, etc.). Authors can see the progress of the peer review process at any time. This engages them in the process and keeps down the communication to the editors.
This is the largest module where all events are generated by the server and sent to editors as users of this module. New manuscripts events are sent to the assigned editors of each
journal. Editors can read manuscripts, correct problems, reformat the figures, verify manuscript readiness, assign reviewers, contact reviewers, track reviews and take action on the
manuscript.
In this module, reviewers get automatic notification once the editors assign and contact them. They can access the manuscripts with any web browser. The reviews are sent via the web
browser. Reviewers can also follow the progress of the manuscript review process.
The server module is used mainly for administration (starting/stopping server, assigning editors, retrieving statistics and generating reports).
